Activities/Achievements

During its first year of implementation the project has proven its capacity to generate concrete and tangible results being able to achieve the following results:

 

  • Set up consultative meetings with and between the community representative, faith based organizations and the provincial administration with the aim of sensitizing the community about the Programme and discuss the framework of community participation;
     
  • Carried out a listening survey by a team of fourteen social surveyors under the guidance of experienced social planners. The survey involved field observations, ad hoc informal interviews and transect walks in all the seven villages. The findings of the survey will inform the formation of the sustainable integrated upgrading plan;
     
  • Carried out a sensitization workshop with the aim of familiarizing with the upgrading process; to prepare for the election of Residents’ Committee; to build consensus among the community and to consolidate the commitment of the community. The workshop had interactive discussions between the Ministry of Local Government, the community and other stakeholders.
     
  • Elected a Residents Committee (RC) to represent residents of each village in Korogocho. The exercise saw the election of six representatives from each village adding to a total of 48 representatives;
     
  • Carried out a Residents Committee (RC) training workshop with the aim of training the 48 representatives and build their capacity to lead the community through the upgrading process. The topics were: leadership and communication skills; the upgrading process and the role of the community in the process; land tenure options; and the planning process;
     
  • Formulated a harmonized work plan designed jointly by all the main lead agencies involved in the Programme.
